Just finished reading copy of Inside parliament authored by Derek. It was a random pick, just 2 days before, from a second hand book shop on my way home from office. However, it was a good read as it gave me good insight on how our parliament functions and how issues are tabled for discussion, it also gave sneak preview of party politics and dynamics at play inside parliament. Knew about some important personalities of political parties and their take on important issues related with common citizen, like GST, demonetization, of our country.
A measurable chunk of the pages are devoted on TMC and glorifying its president Mamta Banerjee and a general politics of West Bengal, also a broad sense of dissatisfaction and disappointment against the Modi led BJP government, is clearly evident throughout the book. However, Derek being stalwart of TMC it doesn’t come as a surprise.
It also reminded me about, though nothing new, how important it is to know stories from both side before making any conclusions. Politicians and spokesperson of political parties are so apt and articulate on issues that it can clearly convince you in a certain way, fact checking, and knowing views of parties from more than one source is imperative to form your own authentic opinion.
After reading this book, my respect to politicians has slightly increased, especially after knowing the amount of effort needed to conduct a well informed and meaningful debate inside parliament. Politics is a field which is open for all and if good folks do not enter here it is bound to show its quality overall and at the end public will be at the receiving end face the consequences.
