Every writing of Mark Twain is work that deserves applauds, He has, this exception ability of coming with extraordinary observation and also, he was equally capable of transforming an ordinary event into beautiful narratives that kept readers glued to the pages. Prince and Pauper is no different in that sense. I thoroughly enjoyed its fast paced, moving story.
This novel is about two kids who are born on the same day and look exactly similar but, that is where all the similarity ends. Tom Canty who belongs to lower class of society is dirt poor both, in his manners and life, his father forces him(and other member of the family) to beg for living everyday. He along with mother and two sisters lives in a small house and uses floor as bed. This poverty as if, is not enough of trouble, Tom’s father threatens and beats him for almost no reasons whatsoever. Edward on the other hand is a price of Wiles and enjoys all the privileges and royal treatment. Life in his side is totally different and unique.
While growing up, Tom learns about the king, prince, royalties and gets attracted towards its charm. It so happens that these 2 character meet each other and decide to swap there place for sometime and experience each others world. This is the point where adventure starts and Mark Twain takes you to the roller coaster ride. I am not covering this part in this review because I don’t want to reveal the core of the story here. I recommend you go through it and enjoy every bit of it by yourself.
Mark Twain who is famously known for his sense of humor and he is also a noted satirist, has limited his style of writing to pure storytelling but wherever he found that opportunity to instill fun, he has done enough to expose the blind spots that existed in Royal societies in terms of justice and privileges. Must read !!
